What is a Surrogate?

A surrogate, also known as a gestational carrier, is a woman who carries a child for individuals (the Intended Parents) who are unable to conceive on their own.

Most surrogates today are gestational, meaning they don’t use their own eggs and have no genetic connection to the baby.

Spring Surrogacy works exclusively with gestational carriers—women who carry the child without a biological link to the baby they are nurturing.

Surrogates are compensated for carrying a child and are protected by a legal agreement signed by both the surrogate and the Intended Parents.

But most importantly, surrogates bring hope and happiness to those who dream of becoming parents! These women, who have their own children and experienced relatively smooth pregnancies, often feel called to help others build their families.

So, what is surrogacy? It’s an extraordinary way to help fulfill Intended Parents’ dreams and to give others the priceless gift of a child!

5 Things to Know About Being A Surrogate

While there’s a wealth of information available on surrogacy, our dedicated and collaborative team is uniquely equipped to deliver accurate, reliable insights for a successful and fulfilling surrogacy journey.

01

Gestational carriers have no genetic connection to the child they carry, as their own genetic material (eggs) is not used in creating the embryos.

02

Surrogates receive compensation from the very beginning and throughout the entire process (not only upon completion), with payments starting even before pregnancy is achieved.

03

Surrogates have the freedom to choose who they are matched with, and each partnership is mutually agreed upon.

04

As part of the IVF process, surrogates do need to administer injections. However, most surrogates say that these injections are nothing to be concerned about!

05

Surrogates do not form a "maternal bond" with the babies they carry and look forward to the moment when the intended parents can hold their newborn for the first time.

There’s no better place to embark on this journey than Spring, where we’ve been supporting surrogates and building families for almost 30 years. If you feel that surrogacy is your calling, start your journey by submitting your application on our platform.

Why Do Women Become Surrogates?

Throughout our long history of helping families grow and providing comprehensive support to surrogates, we've noticed one common trait among all the women who become surrogates: a strong desire to help others.

Various motivations drive women to take on the role of a surrogate, including:

1. Easy Pregnancies

2. Friends and Family With Infertility

3. Help Others

Surrogates represent the essence of kindness and generosity. They receive unwavering encouragement and support from our experienced team, who understands the journey and works every day to help create families.

Who Do Surrogates Help?

Surrogates assist intended parents (IPs) who are unable to expand their families on their own. At Spring, we focus on gestational surrogacy, where the surrogate does not share any genetic connection with the baby she carries.

弹性’s surrogates support intended parents of diverse backgrounds, including all ethnicities, locations, and sexual orientations. Intended parents may be single, in a relationship, or married. Surrogates can be matched with intended parents residing in the United States or abroad. As a surrogate, you can also share your preferences regarding the types of intended parents you would like to assist.

The types of intended parents that surrogates help are:

Heterosexual couples who have faced challenges with infertility

Women who are unable to carry a pregnancy

Prospective parents with a genetic disorder or health condition they wish to avoid passing on to their child

LGBTQIA+ individuals or couples who wish to establish a genetic connection with their child

No matter the parents' circumstances, your willingness to help them bring a child into the world means the world to them.

How Much Does a Surrogate Make?

“How much do surrogates earn?” is a common question for women considering surrogacy, and for good reason.

Gestational surrogacy is an emotional and physical journey, deserving of compensation.

Surrogate earnings can vary, but typically range from $55,000 to $65,000. This estimate includes the surrogate’s base fee—usually between $35,000 and $50,000—as well as additional compensation and benefits received throughout the process.

A surrogate's base fee is determined by several factors:

The state she lives in

Whether or not she has health insurance

If she’s an experienced gestational carrier

After establishing a base fee, a surrogate receives compensation and payments both before and throughout the pregnancy.

At Circle Surrogacy, we offer generous pay and benefits. Learn more and see potential earnings on our dedicated page.

What Is the Process To Become a Surrogate?

Becoming a surrogate involves many mini-milestones leading up to the big day: delivery day!

How long does the surrogate process take?

When you apply to become a surrogate, you might not know how long your journey will last. It can take anywhere from 14 to 20+ months. Your journey begins with your application and depends on factors like how quickly you’re matched with intended parents, your response to IVF medications, and the time needed for embryo creation and transfer.

How long does the surrogate process take?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to the surrogacy process, along with a timeline to help you understand how long it takes to give intended parents the ultimate gift: their baby!

See the full surrogate process in detail.

The six key milestones of the surrogacy process are:

Step 1: PreScreening (1-2 weeks)

The initial step involves completing a surrogate application form. If your application meets the preliminary surrogate criteria, you will be assigned a Surrogate Prescreening Coordinator. At this stage, your medical history will be examined and appraised, and background checks will be conducted.

Step 4: Medical Screening & Legal Contracts (2-3 months)

You will participate in your medical screening at the IVF clinic, which will require an overnight stay, and during this time, you will initiate and conclude contract negotiations with your legal counsel.

Step 2: Surrogacy Consultation (1-2 weeks)

In this phase, you will participate in a video conference with a certified mental health expert. Additionally, your primary support person or spouse will also engage in a separate call with the professional.

Step 5: Monitoring Appointments & Embryo Transfer (3-4 weeks)

Upon medical clearance, you will start taking your prescribed medications. As you self-administer these surrogate medications, you will also attend local monitoring appointments to ensure that your body is responding as expected. Once your body is prepared, you will then proceed to the embryo transfer, which will involve a trip lasting between 3 to 7 days.

Step 3: Matching (1 week to 2 months)

This marks an exhilarating phase: finding a match with your prospective parents! Upon identifying a suitable match, there will be an exchange of profiles with the prospective parents, followed by a video call. Should all parties be in agreement, you will then be officially matched. Circle Surrogacy has a waiting list of prospective parents seeking the perfect surrogate – you might find yourself matched right away!

Step 6: Pregnancy (9 months+)

This phase can seem like the most extended part of the entire process. You will undergo Beta tests at your local clinic to confirm the pregnancy. Following that, an ultrasound will be conducted around 6-7 weeks to verify the presence of a heartbeat. Throughout the pregnancy, you will attend regular check-ups, cultivate your relationship with your intended parents (IPs), and share updates until the momentous occasion: the day of delivery arrives.

Being a Surrogate With Circle Means:

Achieving a feeling of pride and a sense of achievement.

Surrogate FAQs

Below are some common questions about becoming a surrogate. You can read our full list of FAQs about the general surrogacy process from intended parents here.

How many times can l be a surrogate?

The number of times a woman can be a surrogate depends on the total number of pregnancies and deliveries she's had (including her  own). We can work with women that have had 6 or fewer previous deliveries (her surrogate journey would be her 7th pregnancy), and if she's had 3 or fewer c-sections.

Is there an age limit?

Women who are between the ages of 21-42 can qualify to be surrogates. If you are an experienced surrogate, you may be eligible up  to age 44.

Can l be a surrogate if l've never been pregnant?

No. A requirement of all surrogates is that she has had a successful pregnancy and delivery without complications.

What happens if l miscarry?

In the event that you miscarry as a surrogate, you will have the support of your Spring team  through the entire process. A miscarriage can be emotionally and mentally difficult and your social worker will be there to support you. You will be compensated through the month in which you carried. The decision to try again - if it is deemed medically safe - will be discussed between you, your intended parents and their clinic.

What if it's twins?

In the event you become pregnant with twins, your contract will be amended to reflect your twin journey. You will also receive additional  compensation with a twin pregnancy. Most intended parents prefer to transfer one embryo; surrogates must be medically approved for a multiples pregnancy to transfer more than one embryo.
